The wind whistles in the dark void, whispers followed behind. A life has been lost, but this soul is not finished yet. He has many more lives to cross, unknown of how many he may come across. All he knows is that if he fails his duty as a noble cat, he will cease to exist.
The spirit doesn't remember much about his first life, but the most memorable part was his ending. How painful, and yet ever so rewarding. He remembered the sounds of an human child screeching, the roars of a horrifying beast, and lastly, his own agonizing yowls after his sacrifice to save the infant. The attack was brief, yet painful, however, it was better him than an innocent child.
How did he get to such a conclusion? How, living as an animal in a eat or be eaten kind of world, did he ever decide to give up his own life for the life of a human infant? He will never fully understand.
Times have changed, ever so quickly. Though he lacks memories from his previous lives, every once in a while, the spirit does see the changes between humans. One of his surprises was their ability to speak and use their own hands to create things. Beautiful things...
But also dangerous things.
Oh, yes, speaking of danger, he remembers his previous life briefly. Pain and fear of the prickly flames. The madmen shouting curses towards witchcraft, the callings for the banishment of his kind. He does not remember how he died, but he does remember it was not a pleasant death.
He doubts that the next life would be any different.
A life had been lost, but another life must emerge. Violet flames finally lit up, silently beckoning this spirit to come forth, to face a new life. Once the phantom cat approaches, the fire extinguishes. The whispers stopped. A heartbeat pounds in the air.
Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump.
[[Go forth to a new life]]
"Meow, meow!"
Next thing the spirit knew, he was born again. He feels the sensation of hunger again, so he meows louder. His little squeaks prompted his mother to answer his cries, despite his meows being drowned out by his siblings.
Finally, some food. He willingly accepts his mother's offer, and takes her milk. The early days of a kitten wasn't so eventful, but the beginning happens to be the most important part of life, as it seals the fate of the future.
It took quite some time, and he grew ever so impatient with the lack of action, when he finally opened his eyes. Unfortunately, his eyesight was unfocused, so he will have more time to wait before he could crawl.
Another week goes by, and his eyesight has improved! No longer did he have to depend on the sounds of his mother's calls for direction or having to resist different smells of lillies and freshly baked bread. Now, he can see. Most importantly, he can ''crawl''.
His blue eyes revealed to him a clear sky, and a peculiar atmosphere. He struggles with movement, but he's got the motivation for it. Next to him, he finally sees his mother and his siblings.
His mother looked down at him with pride, gently kissing his face with her pink tongue. Her fur was smooth, creamy, and she had a few dashes of brown stripes on her face. Some of his siblings were the same color as his beautiful mother. Though he could only see his paws, he could tell he must look the same as her.
He was, however, even more curious about his new surrounding. Humans walked around, wearing colorful clothing, speaking amongst themselves. A child walked by, pointing at them, fawning over the kitens as his mother ushered her away. The kitten felt a little afraid, until the child's mother approached, gently leaving fish nearby, before pulling her child away from them. The humans didn't seem hostile.
Alas, some exploring would be nice, despite the kitten only being able to crawl.
[[Crawl away]]
[[Stay close to family]]
<audio src="https://static.wixstatic.com/mp3/f5d589_7639ca00e8404bcfa76b2a86be266bb3.mp3" autoplay>Ah ha! Perserverance is your friend! However, mother doesn't seem to like you crawling away from her. Just before you could crawl too far away, mother grabbed you by the scruff, bringing you back to your siblings.
Oh bother.
[[Several Weeks Later]]Several weeks later, the kitten found himself wandering around with his siblings, with his mother following behind.
He had come to know where he was by listening to the words of peculiar humans. The building nearby had a strange, red egg-like roof. The kitten never knew what was so important about it or why the humans cared about it so much. All he knew was that they called it "D'uomo."
Next thing he knew, he learned about Firenze from a merchant claiming to come from a strange place called Roma, and now he's here to sell to "the people of Firenze". He feels like he's heard that name before, he just can't put his paw on it...
Oh how many times has he wandered off already, for his mother to have to constantly go after him? Poor thing.
She was exhausted enough with her mischievous kittens, but fortunately, she only had to deal with five. Today is the day the kittens learn how to climb.
The kitten is eager to learn from his mother, running up ahead of his siblings as she stood before a tree, beginning to scratch her nails on it.
As she continued encouraging her kittens, a blue butterfly flew past the kitten... sparking curiousity.
[[Follow the butterfly]]
[[Stay with mother]]The kitten remembered how dangerous life can be, so instead of crawling away, he decided to huddle up against his siblings and mother, especially for warmth. Though the sun was very useful, it wouldn't hurt to cuddle.
One human, after cooing at the family, proceeded to leave a bowl of water for mother. The kitten still has the internal instinct to be cautious, but given his mother's welcoming behavior, his fear died down.
[[Several Weeks Later]] To his mother's dismay, he followed the blue butterfly instead of his mother. He batted towards it playfully, trying to catch it.
He kept going after it, and crouched down. He was prepared to jump towards it.
His pupils expand.
He wiggles his behind. Now, he's ready for the pounce, watching the butterfly fly.
As he aims to jump into the air to catch it, a pair of jaws beat him to the butterfly, slamming shut as the alarmed kitten fell back, raising his spine as he backed away.
It was a dog. An aggressive one at that. It held the butterfly in his jaws, glaring down at the kitten. Before the dog could make his next move, his mother sprung into action, scratching its snout with an angry hiss.
His siblings followed, huddled close to their brother. They watched their mother as she stood before them, her fur raised, teeth bared, and her ears back. Her tail twitched, followed by a growl. She was prepared to fight this beast.
[[Run]]
[[Stay behind mother]]
<audio src="https://static.wixstatic.com/mp3/f5d589_30d97f69119b4714af77dcb04bb20048.mp3" autoplay>It was a safer bet to stay close to mother, rather than wander off. The lessons continued.
That was, until his mother suddenly paused. Her fur raised up, her ears twitched to the sides, and her pupils expand. Suddenly, she hisses, quickly moving in front of her frightened kittens.
The kitten turned around. Behold, his worse nightmare.
A growling, mangy dog, baring his teeth at his mother.
[[Run]]
[[Stay behind mother]]Despite the yowls of his mother, the kitten dashed away from the group. The mother was able to fight off the dog, preventing him from chasing him. It was no use, the kitten had already pressed his buttons just by running away.
The kitten ran through the crowd of surprised humans, and some tried helping his mother stop the dog. The dog pushed past the humans, ganging up to the kitten. The kitten did everything he could to get rid of the dog, he even went closer to the humans to get them to stop him.
Finally, he turns a corner and into an alleyway, believing perhaps with the sudden turn, he'd lose him.
He underestimate his predator's intelligence.
The dog turned as well, and the kitten ran towards the end of the alleyway to find a dead end.
The dog slowly approaches, snarling with his teeth bared, as the kitten makes his final efforts for survival..
[[Meow]]
[[Fight back]] The dog growled and lunged towards the mother, nearly grasping her in his jaws. Helpless, all off the kittens scattered in fear, all but one, who stood by and watch his mother fight to save her kittens.
Unfortunately, another dog showed up, joining in on the attack. His mother slashed at their snouts with her sharp claws, running back and forth to guard her kitten that stood there, shaking in fear.
One of them grasped her hind leg in his jaw, and the poor mother let out a yowl of pain. A human started rushing towards them, shouting at the dogs while waving around a large wooden board, with the full intention of harming the dogs.
The unoccupied dog approaches the kitten slowly, baring his large fangs as his growls rumbled into the kitten's ears.
[[Run away]]
[[Stay Put]]The kitten made a run for it, running as fast as he can from the beast. The run only provoked the dog's instinct to chase after him. His mother could not catch up to him, with her injured hindleg.
Humans did their best to stop the dog, someone even went as far as trying too tackle the dog, missing miserably.
The chase tore apart the market, with the kitten jumping onto merchant tables and being flown into the air whenever the dog tries to join him, his strength knocking over the tables. Angry venders followed, waving all sorts of things to stop the dog from destroying the market even further.
Finally, the kitten turns a corner to an alleyway, desperate to try to escape the beast. Unfortunately, it was a dead end.
The kitten tries to get out, but it's too late. The dog approaches, slowly. The grumbles brought the kitten's spine up, backing up slowly as the dog prepares to lunge...
With one last effort...
[[Meow]]
[[Fight back]]The kitten stood strong, standing his ground. He, himself, start hissing and spitting at the growling dog.
The dog was impressed, but his hunger was stronger was much more convincing than a measly little kitten.
The last thing the kitten heard before the dog lunge was his own mother yowling out to him, once released from the jaws of the other dog.
Then all he saw was black.
Again, he hears the whispers of the dark void. With the result of this life, he loses one of his nine lives.
His life was very brief, and wasn't memorable much. The soul wasn't satisfied with this ending. Afterall, there was nothing special about that life. He lived, he died.
That's when he sees it again, the purple flames litting up. The sparks sang for him to approach the next life.
A life has been lost, but another must emerge.
[[Go forth to a new life]] The kitten let out a loud, terrified meow. This was entertaining for the dog, prompting him to charge. The kitten shut his eyes tightly when he heard a loud yelp.
When he opened his eyes, a pair of boots stood before him. He looked up slowly to see a man, carrying a wooden paddle. The dog cowered in fear as the man approached again, threatening to hit the dog again, should he approach. The dog fled, letting out yelps of fear.
The kitten backed up as the man kneeled to meet him. Holding out his hand, smiling, the man softly speaks,
"Calmati, stai bene. Nessuno ti farà del male. Poverina..."
The kitten sniffed the palm of the man's hand, batting at it playfully as he chuckled, gently picking up the fiesty kitten.
"Vorrei non dover colpire quel cane in quel modo, ma ti avrebbe fatto male. Da quanto sei piccolo, non avrebbe nemmeno sfamato la sua fame."
The kitten mewed and purred as the man gently pet his fur, looking around.
"Mi chiedo dove sia andata tua madre..."
The man stood up, holding the kitten close to his chest with a sigh, "oh beh. Non sopravviverai qui fuori, da solo. A casa ci si sente soli. Penso che possiamo farci compagnia a vicenda."
The kitten knew nothing of what the man was saying, but the soft tone of his voice softened the kitten with great comfort. He felt safe, and a twinge of sorrow for his loss. He's unsure if he'd ever see his siblings or mother again, if ever.
He curled up in the man's arms as they left the alleyway.
[[A new home]]
<audio src= "https://static.wixstatic.com/mp3/f5d589_508fff0b267a421d88296a313a40a992.mp3" autoplay>What a mistake.
A small kitten taking on a large dog?
What a ''fatal'' mistake.
That was all the soul could think, returning to the dark void. His life was brief, forgettable, but worst of all, uneventful until the end.
He loses a life due to his failure to escape the dog. Well, it was inevitable.
A life has been lost, but another must emerge.
The purple flames tickled the air, beckogning the soul to approach...
[[Go forth to a new life]]The kitten had never been indoors before, he had always been used to the kindness of humans handing out meat and water to his family, but he never had the privledge of living inside a home before.
The man placed him down on the sofa, "Non ci vorrà molto, devo finire il mio lavoro. Se hai fame, sono sicuro che mi troverai in fretta."
The man left him, going into another room. Perhaps it was time to explore? Who is he kidding, there's always time to explore!
The kitten plopped down from the couch, slipping on his side. He recovered quickly, and wandered about his new home.
He found a potted plant by the garden, and ever so gracefully, he jumped onto the small table. Ungracefully, he falls with the table, breaking the vase that confined the plant.
Later, he found himself climbing on the curtains, trying to reach to the very top. As he slips down, his claws tore into the curtains. Hopefully he isn't overwelcoming his stay. ''Hopefully.''
He continued playing around until he heard a frustrated grumble, coming from the room his new friend had entered.
[[Follow the sound]]When the kitten enters the room, he finds the room to be scattered with papers. Sketches, charcoal, paintbrushes, and other art tools were messily scattered.
The man was hunched over nearby, groaning as he scratched out his sketch.
"No, non funziona niente. Non funziona affatto! Non c'è nulla che possa abbozzare? Come posso essere un artista di successo se nulla di ciò che creo va bene?"
The kitten tilted his head at his human companion. He didn't understand his question, nor did he understand who he was speaking to. That's when he sees it. The charcoal. The man took his book again, trying to create something, carefully stroking the paper with the charcoal.
There were several things to play with. Perhaps that would bring a smile to the kitten's new friend?
[[Bat at the charcoal]]
[[Go to the paint]]
[[Play with the paper]]"Ehi, no, smettila!" The man tried pushing away the kitten, but it was too late. The charcoal slid across the paper, ruining the picture.
"Ugh, No, hai rovinato tutto! Oof!" The man crumbled up the paper and threw it to the ground. He continued his sketch, struggling.
That certainly didn't work..
[[Go to the paint]]
[[Play with the paper]] The kitten trotted towards the paint. Curiousity has been getting him in a lot of trouble, but in his eyes, it's better to know and flee than it is to not know a thing at all.
He hovered over the bowl of blue paint, staring at his own reflection. It wasn't very clear, but he could see a brief movement. He started batting at it when the bowl spilled over, making him jump up and run around the room, getting a piece of paper stuck on his paw.
One other paw landed into another bowl of paint, in which the pawprints spread out to different parts of the room as the poor kitten tried to get that stupid paper off his paw.
He paused when he heard a low chuckle. Next thing he knew, he was lifted in the air by the scruff of his neck.
"Piccolo furfante, cosa credi di fare? Ti sei sporcato le zampe di vernice!"
He left the room, carrying the kitten, as he went out to the garden, reaching the fountain. Gently, he started washing off the paint. The kitten struggled, but the man's grip was firm.
"Ora mi hai lasciato un pasticcio da sistemare. Dovrei essere arrabbiato, ma la disperazione nei tuoi occhi spalancati era divertente. Hai imparato la lezione?"
The kitten batted at his hands again, making the man chuckle again.
"Bene. Ora ti serve un nome. Penso che ti chiamerò... Bartolomeo. Come il mio fratellino!"
Bartolomeo was officially the given name of the kitten. Bartolomeo's antics entertained his human friend, even inspiring him to sketch him.
[[Years later]]The kitten went after the crumbled up paper, pouncing on it and chasing after it. During the chase, he knocks over a cup that held paintbrushes.
He turned his attention to the paint brushes, even picking one of them up with his own teeth before running around with it.
He was stopped when a pair of hands picked him up, taking the brush out of his jaws. He looked up to see the man smiling down at him.
"Sei così malizioso. Sei stato abbastanza ispirato da dipingere con questo pennello? Piccolo e sciocco."
He took a red pillow from one of the sofas in the studio, plopped it on a table, and genly placed the kitten on it.
"Stai fermo, mio piccolo modello."
The kitten tilted his head, confused, but nevertheless, pawed at the pillow below him. He circled around, before finding comfort in it, curling up and purring.
When the man was finished sketching, he chuckled and gently pet the kitten.
Stirred from his slumber, the kitten attacked the human hand that woke him. The man couldn't help but laugh some more, pulling his hand away.
"È ora che tu abbia un nome. Visto che sei così birichino, ti chiamerò Bartolomeo, come il mio fratellino. Ti piace?"
Bartolomeo only answered with a soft mew, compelling the human to pet him some more.
Bartolomeo. That's a pretty good name.
[[Years later]] Bartolomeo went from a cute little kitten to a handsome young cat. Over the past few years bonding with his artistic human, he has learned his name: Cristoforo!
One day, Bartolomeo was in the garden, resting under the sun. He stretched out, fully relaxed, until he heard a bit of a commotion from the inside. His ears perked up, and he went to investigate.
When he entered the livingroom, he witnessed the sofa being moved. What's all this? Is someone stealing from his home? But there Cristoforo was, unalarmed, speaking to another human.
"La mia povera nonna. Se avessi saputo che sarebbe morta da sola in quella casa, sarei andata a trovarla prima. Voglio che tutte queste cose vengano sgomberate entro oggi, ho già pagato l'acconto."
The stranger responds with a smirk on his face, "Siete molto fortunato, signore. D'ora in poi comincerà a vivere nel lusso."
"Non ho studiato per diventare un artista per vivere con i soldi della mia defunta nonna. Ho intenzione di creare qualcosa di mio in sua memoria."
"Ti crederò quando il tuo gatto inizierà a dipingere sul soffitto." The man left laughing, leaving Cristoforo to glare at him from behind.
[[The Move]]The move took several days to be finalized, but it was finally done. The duo was beyond exhausted, and took some time to settle down.
A few days later, Bartolomeo was resting by the window, staring at his new neighbors, when he sees a man approach his home. He was carrying some papers in his satchel bag. The man first went to the window and wiggled his finger for Bartolomeo to react. When Bartolomeo responded with a bored yawn, the man left the window.
Just when Bartolomeo was about to return to his slumber, several knocks on the door interrupted him. With a hiss, Bartolomeo aimed to go to the door, only to find his owner had already gotten to it.
"Buongiorno, signore! Sono venuto a consegnare una lettera!" The man handed Cristoforo a letter, with a huge grin on his face.
Cristoforo stared at the letter, raising an eyebrow as he took it, "Una lettera? Mi sono trasferito qui da pochi giorni."
"Sì, lo so, ma ho saputo del suo trasferimento solo di recente. Avrei dovuto consegnargliela lunedì.
Bartolomeo watched Cristoforo open the letter, tilting his head to the side. Cristoforo's confused face lit up in excitement, "La famiglia Moretti sta arrivando? Una commissione? Santo cielo! Questo mi aiuterebbe sicuramente come artista!"
The man nodded, smiling ear to ear, "Ne sono certo, signore. Tuttavia, avrebbero dovuto venire oggi. Li ho visti quando sono tornato a prendere la lettera e ho detto loro il vostro nuovo indirizzo."
Cristoforo's face dropeed, "Oggi? Ma sei impazzito? Non ho nemmeno finito di sbarazzarmi dei topi qui!"
"Mi dispiace, me l'hanno detto all'ultimo minuto. Buona fortuna!" the man turned away, running off to deliver another letter as Cristoforo waved his fist at him,
"Corrier marcio!"
Cristoforo slammed the door and rushed into his new art studio.
[[Follow Cristoforo]]
Cristoforo was setting up the art canvas in a rush, grabbing his supplies as quickly as he could. Bartolomeo watched his alarmed human grab as much as he could, preparing a good scene. Bartolomeo was used to strangers coming in and out of the studio, but he had never seen Cristoforo this anxious before.
Bartolomeo inspected the room, only to hear a squeak, coming from the walls. Bartolomeo inspects it, finding a rat peaking out of a hole. Bartolomeo crouches down, and was close to going for the kill, when a knocking from the door distracted him.
"Oh no, sono loro! Spero che non gli dispiaccia lo stato di questa casa..."
Cristoforo rushed out the door. Bartolomeo followed, alarmed that there would be more strangers in his home. The human turned back to face Bartolomeo, giving him a stern look,
"Comportati bene, Bartolomeo!"
The cat shrinks back, understanding that his human means business.
Cristoforo took a deep breath and opened the doors...
[[The Moretti Family]]A man and woman stood at the door, waiting patiently for the doors to open. The woman smiled widely,
"Ah, Cristoforo, mio caro artista! Tua nonna mi ha parlato tanto di te. Accidenti, sei ancora più bello di persona!"
Her husband glanced at her, nudging her, "Tesoro, comportati bene, hai già abbastanza concorrenza!"
Bartolomeo watched in confusion. They looked a lot different than the strangers Cristoforo normally allows in his studio. The woman had jewels in her hair, her dress was bright and decorative, and her husband had his hair neatly combed back. They must've been really important for Cristoforo to be sweating.
"Signora, signore, mi dispiace molto che abbiate fatto la fatica di trovare la mia casa con così poco preavviso. Ora, signora Moretti, si accomodi! Lo studio è pronto."
The woman wrinkled her nose in confusion, "Di che cosa sta parlando? Non starà pensando di farmi un ritratto, vero? Non è per questo che volevamo una commissione. Vogliamo che lei faccia un ritratto di nostra figlia, Caterina."
Just as she mentioned the name, a young woman approached the door in between the couple, smiling softly at Cristoforo. Bartolomeo looked up to see Cristoforo taken aback. He had never seen his owner like this before, and it confuses him so. He has seen other women before, what's this reaction? Humans can be so dumb sometimes.
"Mi perdoni... Devo aver letto la lettera troppo velocemente..." Cristoforo offered his arm, in which Caterina accepted,
"Non è un problema, Cristoforo. La prego, mi indichi la strada."
The couple started leaving. The woman turned back, teasing, "Torneremo a prendere nostra figlia tra qualche ora. Non faccia nulla di cui si pentirà!"
Cristoforo lead Caterina into the art studio...
[[To the Art Studio]]Cristoforo lead Caterina to the sofa, having her pose for the portrait, "Mi perdoni, il mio studio è ancora in fase di allestimento. Ho preparato lo sfondo per voi."
When he gestured her to sit, Caterina shook her head.
"Mia madre ha detto che per il mio ritratto devo stare in piedi, quindi il divano non sarà necessario."
Cristoforo nodded in response. A rat squeaks, imploring Caterina to let out a gasp, grabbing Cristoforo's arm in fear, "EEK! Ho sentito un topo! Sono terrorizzata dai topi! Sei impazzito? Pensare che io stia in piedi vicino a dei ratti!?"
"No, no, non si preoccupi! I topi hanno troppa paura di Bartolomeo per uscire. Si rilassi, comincio a dipingere." He gently calmed the young model down, helping her take a deep breath. Once she composed herself, it was time to paint.
Bartolomeo loved watching his human paint. It was amazing what humans came up with. Eventually, Bartolomeo grew bored of watching Cristoforo carefully measure proportions, and decided to look around the room.
That's when he sees it. A rat sneaking out from its hole. The rat sniffs the room, and let out a few squeaks. Caterina tried keeping her composure, whimpering softly. The rat prepares to leave his hole.
[[Stop the rat]]
[[Meow at the rat]]
[[Do nothing]]Bartolomeo rushed up to the rat, tackling it before it could fully leave its hole. The pest let out a few painful squeaks until it fell limp in Bartolomeo's mouth. He dropped the rat onto the ground, and looked back at Caterina.
Fortunately, she kept her composure. Bartolomeo relaxed.
<img src = "https://static.wixstatic.com/media/f5d589_9ce1ff3b05f344799def4cd815262b6b~mv2.jpg">
The painting was finished. Caterina was eager to see it, and her eyes lit up so bright when she saw the finished product,
"Devo dire, Cristoforo, che sei un artista di talento. Mi piace molto il mio aspetto. Ma..."
Cristoforo looked at her, seeing as her expression slightly changed, "Ma cosa?"
She giggled, "Non credo di aver indossato il vestito giusto. Forse..."
Caterina smiled at him again, leaving the room. Cristoforo was paid a great amount for the successful commission. The Morettis fawned over the painting, and wasted no time in taking the painting home with them.
Bartolomeo slowly slinked back into the studio as the family interacted with Cristoforo. He left a dead rat in there, and it must be disposed of. Before he could even pick up the rat-
"Bartolomeo."
The cat paused, and slowly looked at his human. Cristoforo gave him a knowing smile, "Grazie."
Bartolomeo nodded his head.
Caterina was a frequent visitor, and even more models came in and out of Cristoforo's studio.
Bartolomeo never really questioned Caterina's presence.
That is... until he caught Cristoforo holding her hand one day.
[[End]] "Shh! Sto cercando di concentrarmi, Meo!" Cristoforo scolded.
Caterina softened her face, smiling, "Per favore, non sgridarlo, i suoi miagolii mi confortano."
Cristoforo froze at the sight of Caterina's expression. Urgently, he gestures to her, "Aspetta un momento. Mantieni questa espressione. È perfetta!"
As Cristoforo quickly referenced her face, Bartolomeo watched as the rat sinks back into his hole, afraid of Bartolomeo's presence.
Bartolomeo was triumphant.
Since then, Caterina often visits to see Bartolomeo and Cristoforo, becoming more comfortable around the home and in his presence.
Business boomed not long after, with Caterina's friends all wanting to meet Bartolomeo and have their portraits taken. Mrs. Moretti wasn't pleased with the portrait of her daughter, as it has a little mistake in it, but Caterina made an effort to help Cristoforo with business.
Whenever she comes over, she brings treats for both Cristoforo and Caterina.
He couldn't be more happy.
[[End]] Bartolomeo watched as the rat let out a loud squeak, rushing out of his hole. Caterina let out a scream, startling Cristoforo into ruining the painting as she rushed out of the door, screaming at the top of her lungs.
"No, no, aspetta! Caterina! Torna indietro! Torna indietro! Possiamo cambiare stanza se vuoi!"
He rushed after her, but it was no use. She ran as far as she could. Her family would not commission again.
Business was scarce, since that day, especially when Mrs. Moretti spread rumors about Cristoforo's home being infested with rats. It was true the home had a rat problem, but even when Cristoforo had managed to get rid of the rats, the damage was already done. Eventually, Cristoforo lost the house.
Bartolomeo refused to leave his side, no matter what Cristoforo tried to do for the cat's safety.
People past by the two of them, day by day, and they were barely given enough food.
Bartolomeo curled up in Cristoforo's arms, during Florence's cruel December. White blankets covered the duo, but they only encourage the shivering and the sneezing.
The only thing Bartolomeo could think of was the cold.
That was all he thought about. That was the last thing he thought about.
